'97 Story:

On a perfectly bright and warm Santa Cruz morning, a thousand athletes, the largest field yet, gathered near the Boardwalk and stared at the pounding 8ft waves. I think of the salt water I was forced to swallow while practicing in the surf the day before. The water's warm but getting out to it and then back out again will be a challenge.

It's the last triathlon of the season, all my friends are here, I wish there was more time to catch up. They've all had exciting seasons, building up, or winding down, to this race. It's extra exciting for me because I think this will be my first "full-go" race.

No more pains or pads or special shoes or stopping for adjustments. A final test to see where I'm at after a year of healing.

Our first wave gets lucky, moderate swells, the water is great, smooth sailing to the end of the pier. Around the first buoy I'm yanked backwards suddenly when the anchor rope gets wrapped around my arm somehow. Once free and swimming again I hear the familiar sea lions under the pier. Above, a friend yells my name and I try to wave.   Up ahead I see the waves breaking hard. Luckily, instead of getting pounded, I just miss the wave and get sucked backward into a mess of seaweed. Felt helpless for a bit but got out safely. Another athlete dislocated his shoulder after getting tossed into the sand.

On the bike everything feels good. I'm 20th and bikes are sparse, clear sailing. The view along HWY 1 is beautiful. Yesterday, my wheel had a problem and blew 3 tubes in a row. I'm hoping I got it fixed. At Davenport turn-around I get my 2nd wind. Powered by Cytomax, I move up to 15th. I'm remembering the techniques, staying fast on the hills. Then I feel even better, keeping 27mph on the way in. I stretch as I coast Into the transition. The spectators look like they're having a blast. Cool, I averaged 25mph! But now's the true test...

Out on the run, the legs feel good. I see the surfers challenging the big waves and the tourists watching them in disbelief. And here I am, running along West Cliff, once again enjoying going fast. I thank God more than once. I'm happy with my 6:20 pace, but see Scott Adams go blasting by. I get down to 6:00 pace and see a pro and a 22yr old go blasting by! Then I see Chris Pendray coming back. I have aspirations of catching him like I did last year (But he had aspirations of NOT getting caught and the training to back it up!) At 5:50 pace I still feel good. Heading back, I see a lot of friends going out, their encouragements are so helpful. I see last year's winner, Greg Thompson, getting medical attention after tripping in the run. 5:40 pace, no sign of Chris. In the final mile I see Scott Adams. I drop down to 5:30 and just get by him to finish 12th (5th in my age) in 1:57:57 and only 1-1/2 minutes slower than my PR last year. The finish stretch was awesome, people cheering on both sides... it's good to be BACK! And the tube in my tire exploded while I was running! After a quick prayer I learn of other great stories. Most impressive being Chris Pendray who surprisingly passed the pros on the bike and started the run in 1st overall. He meddled with 3rd place. Laura, who almost signaled to be pulled out when she was pummeled by a set of waves, tore up the bike course and got 9th. Clint maintained his top Clydesdale ranking with a 2nd place out of 26. And Tina, in her 2nd triathlon, beat 60% of her field.
