I did Joe Oakes' S.F. Amphibathon on Saturday. It's usually small (about 45 people) and low pressure. I've done it 3 years now and the shirt, which has this totally cool amphibious (part water/part land) creature on it, hasn't changed yet!

The swim is 1000m around the aquatic park cove and then we run 10k over 1 hill and then flat along Chrissy Field towards the GG bridge. I tried to stay with the leaders in the swim but it was so difficult. Quickly I noticed the water was freezing, my breathing was hard, and my heart was redlined. I stayed anaerobic for most of it and fought to stay on the heels in front of me. I was about 5th or 6th. I tried to pass once but couldn't go faster so I let him do the real work all the way.

Out of the water I was completely dizzy which made putting shoes on difficult. My breathing was still out of control which made for stitches and a tough, disoriented climb up the first hill. I was 3rd after transition and could see 2nd up ahead. I was waiting for everything to feel normal before I tried to catch him but as I felt better he felt better and stayed 30secs ahead. It was a beautiful, sunny day along the bay, everyone was out exercising, and we were racing along in our speedos. I was finally having fun, realizing that a tough training week and a 100mi ride the day before should keep me from grand expectations. 2 runners passed me. I stayed on one but the other went on to pass the field and win the race. After the turn, it was getting pretty hot. Another run race was also going on so it got a little crowded. I raced in for 5th place after 11:30 for the swim and 38:40 for the run.

It was nice to be done in less than an hour compared to over 10 hrs for Ironman. It's definitely a different feeling. Although long, the Ironman swim seemed nice compared to being without breath for 10min. It was fun and always a great excuse to visit the "City" and see the phenomenal Alcatraz and Golden Gate Bridge.
